Careless Dialing
Be very careful when placing a collect or other operator-assisted calls, or you or the party you are calling may end up paying a higher rate. The unexpected charges may come as a result of a new scheme involving "fat-finger dialing."
How it happens: You place a call from a public phone or payphone, intending to use a service like 1-800-CALL-ATT or 1-800-COLLECT. But you misspell or hit an incorrect button when dialing. You accidentally dial something like 1-800-CALLAT.
You get connected to the party you wished to call, but the phone company that connects you is not the one you intended to use. Instead, it is a company that secures 800 numbers related to well-known ones. For example, a company secures the number "800-CALLAT".
The company banks on the possibility that you might accidentally misspell or misdial your intended number. Often, the company won't identify itself to you or the person receiving the collect call before connecting the call. The charges for the misdialed call are 2 to 3 times higher than it would have been.

ECG is available in approximately 80% of the country. When you request service, it will tell you if they don't serve your area.
Dial carefully so that you can avoid this problem. Listen to the handset while dialing the number to make sure you hit each number only once. If you are not sure you dialed correctly, hang up and start again.

Call Splashing
Call splashing happens when you place a call from a public phone/payphone, hotel or airport phone and gets routed to a distant call center before it gets transferred to your chosen long distance carrier.
Your preferred long distance carrier might unintentionally bill your call as originating from the distant call center, rather than from your actual location. As a result, you may be charged a higher long distance rates for the call.
To avoid this kind of problem listen carefully to the operator and do NOT consent any call transfers unless you understand where the call is being transferred. Also, check your phone bill and make sure that the origination and destination of the call is correct.
You may file a complaint with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) through their e-mail fccinfo@fcc.gov, website www.fcc.gov/cgb/complaints.html, or by phone 1-888-CALL-FCC (1-888-225-5322).

Difference between a direct call and an operator-assisted call
If you dial the entire number to place a long distance call it is called direct dial. Dialing the phone number directly can give you the best rate on your long distance or international call.
When an operator helps you place your call it is an operator-assisted call. This will always cost more because of the "convenience" of the service. The cost of this convenience could be a dollar or more per minute for the entire call. That would ruin any savings you might have had with a good plan. Always dial your destination directly for lower rates to save money.
Never use an operator when making an international call unless it is an absolute emergency. You will be shocked when you receive the bill. Obviously for every rule there are exceptions like: collect calls, person-to-person and third party billings. But whenever possible use dial direct or use a dial around service.
When using an operator to place a call, here are some helpful tips:
The best way to place your call is to dial "0" followed by the number you wish to call, such as 0-987-654-3210. This will help make the connection faster. This method could be less expensive depending upon the carrier. The Standard way is to dial "0" or "00" for international calls and tell the operator the number you wish to call and any special instructions such as collect or person-to-person.
Here are our recommendations:
Everdial Long Distance 4.9¢ state-to-state rate, 24hours 7 days a week. 30 second initial, 6 second increments. Excellent international rates, low in-state rates. NO MONTHLY MINIMUMS or FEES. A 99¢ Carrier Recovery Fee takes the place of the 3% Federal tax.

90# Telephone Scam
If you receive a call from a representative or technician of a phone company asking you to pres 9, 0 and # then hangs up to complete the maintenance check of your phone – be warned! By doing this you are enabling that person to make long distance or international calls that will be charged to your phone number.
Telephone companies calling to check about technical and other types of phone service or billing problems will NOT call and ask a subscriber to dial a specific series of numbers before hanging up the phone receiver. These types of calls are made to trick subscribers into taking actions that will enable the caller to place fraudulent calls.
For business lines this scam works if you are served by a private branch exchange (PBX) or private automatic branch exchange (PABX). By doing this, it enables the person to make long distance calls that are billed to your office phone number.
What You Need to Know:
Telephone company employees calling to check about technical and other types of phone service or billing problems will NOT call and ask a subscriber to dial a specific series of numbers before hanging up the phone receiver. These types of calls are made to trick subscribers into taking actions that will enable the caller to place fraudulent calls.
This scam only works if your phone is served by a private branch exchange (PBX) or private automatic branch exchange (PABX).
If your company utilizes either a PBX or a PABX, you or your company’s telecommunications manager should contact the manufacturer of the PBX or PABX and the phone companies that provide you with local or long distance service to obtain information about the type of security systems available to protect your phone system from toll fraud.
Avoiding this scam:
Get the name and telephone number.
Inform the caller that you will personally call the phone company to verify the maintenance check or any problems with the line.
Hang up and do not dial any numbers to transfer the caller to an outside line.
Call your phone company and report the suspicious phone call and provide the details of the call.
Once verified that there is no maintenance check from your phone company, call your local law enforcement officials to report the incident.

Calling Card Scam
This usually happens when you receive a phone call from someone claiming that they are calling from a fraud prevention division of a well-known long distance carrier or from the calling card company. The scammer informs you that there has been an activity on your calling card that appears suspicious. The scammers will tell you the first five or six digits of your card so that they can get your trust and ask you for the remaining numbers.
These first five or six digits are fairly common. Never under any circumstances should you give your calling card number to anyone over the phone. This is not how long distance carriers verify this issue. If you have given out your calling card number immediately cancel the card and request a new one.

Schemes of long distance carriers
The following are schemes used by different long distance companies into tricking you and switching to their long distance company:
Checks in the Mail
Other long distance carriers would send you a check if you would switch your long distance service to them. Although this may be a good deal, compare first if they would give you the lowest rate for your long distance calls or if it would help you save money. Make sure you are getting the best deal before signing up to their services.
Discount Plans
Telemarketing or unsolicited mails will inform you that they have the lowest rate if you switch to them. Compare if the rates that they are offering are lower than the ones that you already have. Usually, they would compare their rate on a high priced long distance carrier. You need to carefully examine telephone or mail solicitations. Ask more questions and find out about any hidden costs, restrictions or contracts associated with discount plans. If you are not getting straight answers, you probably have a reason to be suspicious.
Five-Digit Discount Codes
Pay a lot of attention if you get an offer that says you can have big savings if you use the five-digit discount codes. It will not change your long distance carrier but it may connect you with a long distance company that would charge you with a higher rate that you are paying right now.
Short-Term Bargains
Another strategy for you to switch to their long distance company is that they offer you a certain service at a discounted fee. But, these types of bargains may only last for a week or a month. After the promo you might automatically continue the service at their regular rate, which might be higher than what you usually pay for, unless you cancel it. Remember that your local telephone company charges a fee to change your long distance company. Some long distance companies will pay this charge if you switch to their service but also consider that other long distance companies do not.

Tips for choosing an international long distance service
There are a lot of long distance carriers that offer low international rates. Shop around and compare prices for plans, dial-around, pre-paid calling cards, and callbacks. Carefully read the terms and conditions for each of these services, they might have some hidden charges or terms that would make you pay the same rates on call for a certain amount of time. If you know your calling pattern, think about whether you make enough calls each month to justify monthly fees that might be associated with a calling plan, it might be better for you to get an unlimited calling plan if you make a lot of international calls.
Do not hesitate to call the toll free number of the long distance carrier if you have any questions on their international long distance plans available.
If you already have a long distance plan check them regularly they might have a new rate or plan available that could give you more savings.

Calling Cards
Calling cards are important. You need to keep one as a back up for times your cell phone isn't working or you're out of network or for traveling.Cards can come in several different forms, from a plastic card with an access number and PIN on it, to a 'virtual' card, where you order a card on line and the access number and PIN are emailed to you. Cards can be purchased online or at your neighborhood convenience store. The bad side about calling cards:
Busted – Some calling card companies go out of business. When this happens your card is useless. Make sure you buy calling cards from companies that’s been in business for more than 5 years.
Breakage - Expiration dates and unused balances. Balance unused or forgotten, is called 'breakage' in the industry. It's an easy way for a prepaid calling card company to make big profits at your expense. Make sure that the calling card that you buy has no expiration and no monthly fees.
Loss - A prepaid card is like cash. If lost, stolen, or destroyed - it's gone. There's no way to cancel or close a prepaid calling card.
Quality - In most cases, once you've used a card, it's yours. No going back and getting a refund if the call quality or services is not what you expect.
Calling card is a good option just make sure to consider the following:
No Expiration
No Monthly Charge - During months that the card is not in used. Many companies will charge a small service charge during months that the card is used. That reasonable and fair. But in months you don't use the card, there should be no charges.
No Connection Fee - Some cards charge a low rate, but have a high 'connection' fee: a per call fee charged at the time the call connects. Sometimes a connection fee can be justified.
Per Minute Billing - Avoid cards that charge in larger billing increments. Some will offer a low rate but have three, or five, minute billing cycles. You might talk for just a minute, but be charged for five! Look for some thing that is 1 minute billing increments.

Long Distance - Direct Dial Service
1+ direct dial service. This is your basic long distance service. To make a call, you dial 1 plus the area code and number of the person you are calling to. Whether you go with a big brand name company, or a small discount company - call quality is the same. You won't hear any difference between the two. For US calls, they are all using the same lines. Factors you should consider:
Cost - more often than not, you'll get your best deal with a small company that you have probably never heard of. This is because the big companies pay millions in advertising each year. Smaller companies will come along and undercut them, then market their services cheaply through agencies and word of mouth.
Billing – It is important that you get all the information. Ask about their per call surcharges, monthly fees, minimum usage per month and a like.
Billing Options - you will usually get your best deal if you opt for credit card billing. That's because it's cost efficient for the smaller companies. Instead of a paper bill, you will have a secure online account manager. It's convenient!
International Calls - Different companies use different international carriers and routes. If you make international calls, it's important to use a company that keeps international call quality high. Make sure to ask the long distance agent the quality of their international lines
Customer Service – Make sure that there is a phone number you can contact when you need assistance. Some long distance companies only use email.
